A screen demanding a device update - and within days access to hundreds of chats can close forever. It's not just the iPhone 5s: WhatsApp regularly raises minimum OS requirements, and various Android and iOS models get cut off. The main risk isn't losing the number - the number stays alive. The risk is losing convenient access to chat history and accumulated contacts if migration wasn't prepared in advance.

The real asset at risk isn't the SIM or the number itself, but accumulated chat history and contacts physically stored in the app cache on the old device. Miss the window and that data may be gone with no recovery path.


The right path: migration, not parsing

Before hunting third-party software for emergency rescue, take the official route: move the account to a new smartphone through standard number verification. That closes the core problem - number and messenger access preserved fully, without third-party tool risks.

A nuance rarely mentioned upfront: backup from the old unsupported phone (via Google Drive or iCloud) doesn't always restore cleanly on a new device. Version differences in the messenger's internal database structure sometimes trigger incompatibility errors when restoring on a modern app build. No confirmed Meta mechanism - practitioner observation, not documented policy - but worth keeping in mind; don't defer export to the last moment before deadline.

Additional detail: once the primary device loses support and disconnects from Meta servers, all linked devices (Linked Devices on PC or other phones) auto-deauthorize within 24–48 hours. Factor that window into planning - delayed data collection via a linked device after the primary phone is cut off may simply not happen in time.
